File your home exemption now!

What is a Homestead Exemption?

A Homestead Exemption helps you save on taxes on your home. An exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation and lowers your taxes. For example, if your home is valued at $100,000 and you qualify for a $20,000 exemption, you pay taxes on your home as if it was worth only $80,000.

How do you apply for a Homestead Exemption?

To apply for a Homestead Exemption, the Residence Homestead Exemption Application and all supporting documentation must be filed with the appraisal district office in each county in which the property is located. You can file the completed application between Jan. 1 and April 30 of the year for which you are requesting an exemption.

Montgomery County Residents: If you live in Montgomery County, visit the Montgomery County Appraisal District to obtain the Homestead Application.

Harris County Residents: Filing your Homestead Exemption in Harris County is easier than ever! HCAD has a new app to help you file quick and easy. You can visit their website to get the form or download the app from the iTunes store.

Do you need to apply annually?

No, if the chief appraiser grants the exemption, you do not need to reapply annually.
